BTC and ETH on 2026-10-07: what drove the drop, how big the liquidations were, and whether whales are dumping

The drop looks like a macro risk-off move (oil, yields, dollar) amplified by leverage. The "huge whales dumping" claim is not shown by any on-chain data I found. The one large flow is a US government transfer.

Price now

The first posts (ZenaXBT, 10:21 UTC) described BTC falling from about $85.5K to under $84K, with ETH briefly under $2,600. The move went further afterwards. WatcherGuru reported BTC under $83,000 at 13:50 UTC. At 19:38 UTC the exchange quotes were BTC about $83.3K (Binance spot $83,362, 24h -2.5%) and ETH about $2,567 (Binance 24h -4.5%). So $83,500 and "ETH below $2,600" are accurate, but they are no longer the lows.

Liquidation figures are inconsistent

  • Early posts said $400-440M of longs (CryptoTweets, DeFiTracer).

  • Later reports put total liquidations at about $550-650M over 24h, e.g. CryptoChefUSA and DailyCoin, which cites CoinGlass for $612M.

  • DailyCoin's split is $550M short and $62M long, which contradicts the "longs flushed" story. Its own sub-figures (BTC longs $154M, ETH longs $217M) also don't add up to $62M. Treat the long/short split as unreliable.

Stated causes

  • Several posts blame oil: Iranian tanker attacks in the Strait of Hormuz pushed Brent above $101, with yields and the dollar firmer (Muqeem94, danvprado). One report puts the 10-year yield above 5.3% and says Fed September minutes are due tonight (ForexxKriptoEn). These are social posts, not primary sources.

  • Crypto lagged stocks. DailyCoin notes the S&P 500 closed at a record on Oct 6.

  • Glassnode, via DailyCoin, calls spot demand fragile. About 86% of BTC sent to exchanges on Oct 4 came from short-term holders selling at a profit. It flags liquidation zones at $81.7K-$83.3K, about $75K and $60K-$63K.

  • Alts fell harder, with posts citing Abstract's L2 shutdown (OP -10%). That claim is also unverified.

Whales

  • The US government moved about $470M of BTC, WBTC and USDT to likely Coinbase Prime deposit addresses, including coins seized from the Bitfinex hacker and Alameda, per Arkham. It was reported at 17:05 UTC, after the first 10:21 UTC drop, so it cannot explain that leg. Arkham says "likely" deposit addresses; it does not show a sale.

  • A dormant 2011 wallet moved 28.46 BTC (about $2.4M) toward Kraken (36Crypto). That is too small to move the market.

  • I found no data showing coordinated whale selling "ahead of the US open".

Offsetting news

Robinhood bought $25M of BTC for its balance sheet (Arkham), and Sberbank got approval for crypto custody (WatcherGuru). Neither stopped the fall.

Levels to watch

The CoinGlass 7-day map shows about $6.5B of modeled shorts above spot against $3.1B of longs below, with the nearest short cluster near $84.8K (arturillo955). These are modeled levels, not realized losses.
