The Information reported overnight that OpenAI plans to buy Google AI chips, Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), to diversify compute beyond Nvidia, where it has long been one of the biggest customers and which is also a backer (tradfi, Cointelegraph).
Posts summarizing the piece say no price, volume or delivery dates were disclosed, and that OpenAI and Google declined to comment. OpenAI has rented Google chips since 2025 to cut inference costs, buying them would take the relationship further, and it is also hiring engineers to tune models for TPUs while preparing its own chip with Broadcom.
The same reports note Oracle will become the first hyperscale cloud outside Google to offer TPUs, starting in 2027 and ramping to gigawatt scale, plus Alphabet reports Q3 after the US close today, putting cloud growth and TPU demand in focus.
On price, exchanges polled quote GOOGL perpetuals around $326.57-326.62, up about 2.4% on the day on Gate and KuCoin, observed Oct. 28. That is the venues' quote, not confirmation of the deal itself.
