Bitcoin ($BTC) fell below $81,000 on 8 Oct 2026. This covers the current price and what drove the drop

BTC trades at about $81.4K to $81.5K, down roughly 2.3% over 24h. The drop came from oil and bond-yield stress, the US government moving about $1B of BTC, and an AI-versus-cryptography scare. Together they set off long liquidations.

Current price

At 19:13 UTC, Binance spot showed $81,498, OKX spot $81,500.8, Kraken spot $81,434.9 and Upbit about $81,526 (KRW converted). The perpetuals sit at $81,435 to $81,462. The spread across venues is about 0.1%. DefiLlama's CoinGecko-based price is $81,407. The break below $81K was first announced by CoinGecko at 16:02 UTC. It is the lowest level in about a month, which means the earlier sweep of the September lows near $82.5K did not hold.

What caused it

The sources list several overlapping causes. None is confirmed as the main one.

  • Oil and rates. Bitcoin Magazine tied the break below $81K to Brent crude climbing to a monthly high of $105/barrel. A market report says Brent rose nearly 5% after new tanker attacks in the Strait of Hormuz. It also says the September FOMC minutes point to another rate hike by year-end. Treasury yields are near 24-year highs, per a news digest.

  • US government transfers. Posts report about $1B (12,267 BTC) moved from a Bitfinex-hack wallet to Coinbase-linked addresses. A roundup says no sale is confirmed. CryptosR_Us cites another $770M sent to Coinbase Prime hours earlier. Our earlier note also cites CoinMarketCap and Arkham on a $470M move.

  • AI and quantum fear. Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake warned that AI could break ECDSA "in months, not years" and urged "bunker mode". CoinDesk reports that over 6M BTC sit behind exposed public keys.

  • Equities. BitcoinArchive notes the Nasdaq was down 1.3%. Nurseinweb adds a report that OpenAI's annualized revenue came in below earlier signals.

  • Liquidations. Figures differ by source: about $700M in the roundup and over $1.1B, mostly longs, per kasichh_. MarketIntelLab called it forced selling rather than shifting demand.

Context

Earlier on 8 Oct, analysts such as CryptoMichNL expected the $82.5K sweep to end the correction. That did not happen. Daan's earlier high-timeframe levels were $75K and $72K.

The sources do not establish which cause dominated, or whether the government transfers were sales.
