## SEC cleared listing path for first U.S. 3x Bitcoin and Ether funds — but they can't trade yet
What happened
On Oct. 2, 2026, the SEC approved a Cboe BZX exchange rule change to list six 3x leveraged funds from Volatility Shares / VS Trust, according to Decrypt.
The six products cover:
Bitcoin, Ethereum, gold, silver, crude oil and natural gas
Each fund targets 3x the daily performance of futures contracts on its asset — per the supplied posts, CME futures-based benchmarks, not spot BTC or ETH holdings — with a daily reset, as reported by @CoinMarketCap, @CoinDesk and @WatcherGuru.
This is the first U.S. approval of 3x leveraged $BTC and $ETH exchange-traded products, previously capped at 2x leverage, per CoinDesk.
Critical condition
listing approval ≠ launch. Per Cboe's filing cited by Decrypt, shares can't trade until each fund's registration statement (S-1) is declared effective. The order sets no launch date.
### What it means
More leverage, not spot exposure: buyers would get triple the *one-day* futures move, not triple the long-term spot return. Multi-day returns compound and can diverge sharply — e.g. a fall then equal rise leaves both spot and especially a 3x daily fund down.
Regulatory shift: Decrypt reports the SEC halted review of >2x products in Dec. 2025 (warning letters to nine issuers including ProShares) and in March 2026 asked issuers to avoid 5x after Defiance filed for 49 3x long/short funds in Oct. 2025 and Volatility Shares filed for 5x. This order re-opens 3x for crypto after that freeze.
Context: Volatility Shares launched the first U.S. leveraged crypto ETF in 2023 (Bitcoin futures); spot Bitcoin ETFs arrived Jan. 2024. It already offers 2x BTC, ETH, Solana, XRP, and in April 2026 launched 2x Cardano, Stellar and Chainlink.
Precedent: 3x commodity funds are not new — earlier 3x silver, crude oil and natural gas products from other issuers have since left the market; a 3x gold product still trades, per the order.
Guardrails: brokers remain subject to Regulation Best Interest and FINRA tougher sales/margin rules for leveraged products.
The data does not yet establish an effective registration date or trading launch date.
