Robinhood ($HOOD) and its $25M bitcoin purchase: confirmed by the executive, but only as a statement
Johann Kerbrat, Robinhood's SVP and GM of Crypto, said it himself. The amount is about $25M, or roughly 300 BTC at about $83,300. No coin count, purchase transaction or SEC filing has surfaced yet.
What is confirmed
Kerbrat posted on X on Oct 7: "I'm excited to share we're adding $25 million of Bitcoin to our balance sheet. We believe firmly in the future of crypto and view this as a strategic move for our overall asset diversification."
He also discussed it in an interview on The Block's Starting Block, recorded at Digital Asset Summit Asia. CaffeSatoshi and 21RatesHQ relay this. I found The Block's own article only through a Crypto Briefing link, not directly.
Arkham and Cointelegraph reported it the same day. Arkham called it Robinhood's first BTC purchase for its own balance sheet.
The @RobinhoodApp account had not posted about it in its latest 15 posts.
Details
It is company money, separate from the roughly $25B of customer crypto Robinhood holds in custody, per HermesLux and CryptoLifer33.
55Markets put it at roughly 300 BTC at about $84,000 per coin. BTC now trades near $83,300 across exchanges. 21RatesHQ estimated about 294 BTC, but that is an estimate, not a disclosed figure.
Kerbrat told The Block that "We care deeply about bitcoin and the ecosystem around it," and that $25M "is not going to change a lot" for a company worth about $100B, per 55Markets and bullish1312.
The Form 4 and Form 144 filings on EDGAR are insider ownership filings, not disclosures of this purchase.
Implications
Signal, not strategy. The $25M is about 0.025% of market cap. 21RatesHQ says no leverage, accumulation plan or further buys were announced. Benzinga framed it as joining Strategy and Tesla as public companies holding BTC.
Timing. It lands alongside Robinhood's push into crypto products: Robinhood Chain, Stock Tokens, and US perps via Bitstamp.
Market context. BTC is down about 2.7% in 24 hours and has been rejected at $87K three times since Sept 23, per WallStreet2Web3. The purchase is too small to move price.
Overstated takes. The "550 companies × $25M ≈ 164,000 BTC" figure from AAStack is a hypothetical, not a result.
Not established
The exact BTC amount, the purchase date and venue, and any formal disclosure. Robinhood's next quarterly filing would be the first likely place for those.
