STRK jumped about 45-48% in 24 hours after Starknet and StarkWare publicly said they are considering becoming an independent L1. They confirmed the consideration, not a decision

Why the price rose

Starknet's own post on Oct 8 said: "We are actively considering becoming an L1. This would enable Starknet to become the first fully quantum-resistant network, with 2027 as our target." The same morning, StarkWare co-founder and CEO Eli Ben-Sasson made the case at Token2049 in a thread. He said Starknet is built on ZK-STARKs, has crypto agility and a migration roadmap to post-quantum signatures. As an L2 it relies on Ethereum's security, though, and Ethereum targets full L1 quantum resistance only by the end of 2029. Starknet could get there by 2027. An own L1 would let it control security upgrades instead of waiting for Ethereum or Bitcoin. The news was then picked up by Cointelegraph, The Block and The Defiant, and a quantum/AI-security narrative formed around it. One trader post cites open interest up more than $17M and perp volume about 4x spot (BaoChau1992), so leverage probably amplified the move. That is a trader's claim and I have not checked it.

Is it confirmed?

  • Yes, as an intention to explore it. StarkWare wrote it is "seriously considering becoming an independent L1". Its other post put it to the community as a question: "Should we remove this dependency and turn Starknet into an independent L1?"

  • No, as a decision. Ben-Sasson said Starknet is "considering multiple options, including becoming an L1". News wire summaries say nothing is decided and that no technical details were given, and Starknet is asking the community for feedback.

  • StarkWare also repeated that Starknet will be post-quantum secure by 2027. That is a separate target.

  • The "47%" in the Cointelegraph post, and Cointelegraph's wording "revealed plans", overstates this. The sources describe consideration, not a plan.

The move in numbers

On Oct 9 around 08:30 UTC STRK traded near $0.072-0.073 on major exchanges. Binance spot showed about +47.7% over 24h, and the Ekubo STRK/USDC pool on Starknet about +45.8%. The 31.4% figure in CoinGecko's post is an earlier snapshot of the same rally. Most of the gain came in the last 6 hours (about +18%), and the last hour was flat.

Risk

A post claims 127M STRK unlock on Oct 15. I have not verified that figure.

The sources do not say how a migration would work, such as bridging, settlement or the future role of the STRK token.
