Aptos tokenomics update: what is confirmed, and which forwarded claims hold

The Foundation's 210M APT lock is confirmed by its own post, and the "almost 18%" share checks out against the circulating supply the article gives. The claim that 2.6% staking rewards are already in effect is not supported: the Foundation's text describes it as a governance proposal it intends to start.

What the Foundation says

  • The full update was published on 2026-02-18, titled "Aptos Tokenomics Update: Moving to Performance-Driven Supply Mechanisms". Its stated aim is to replace bootstrap-era subsidy with mechanisms tied to network activity, so that burns can exceed emissions.

  • Staking: the Foundation "intends to initiate a governance proposal" to cut the annual staking reward rate from 5.19% to 2.6%. It says this builds on the earlier cut to 5.19% proposed in AIP-119.

  • The Foundation is also "exploring" a staking framework with higher rewards for longer lock-ups, keeping total rewards within the reduced emission level. Separately, AIP-139 (a new validator architecture) is meant to lower operating costs.

  • On 2026-10-08 the Foundation posted that it has committed to locking and permanently staking 210M APT, "about 37% of the APT it held at mainnet". Those tokens will never be sold or distributed, and Foundation operations will be funded by the staking rewards they earn.

Is 2.6% already in effect? The sources do not show it. The Foundation's wording is a proposal and an intention, and I found no AIP or governance result that sets 2.6%. The BredoStrategy post says "по данным TokenPost" the rate is already 2.6% as of 8 October, but that is a secondhand claim and no primary source for it turned up. Treat it as unverified. The 5.19% rate is the one the Foundation itself describes as the current, already-reduced level.

Share of supply for 210M

The article gives 1.196 billion APT in circulation, and 210M / 1.196B is about 17.6%. So "almost 18% of current supply" is a fair rounding, with the caveat that the 1.196B figure dates from the February article. The Foundation itself frames the 210M differently, as about 37% of what it held at mainnet. The forwarded "18% of total supply" version is correct only if "supply" means circulating supply.

Claims I could not confirm

The readable part of the article covers the staking cut, the unlock schedule and the validator changes. It does not show the 2.1B supply cap, the tenfold gas increase, or the claim that gas fees are fully burned. Those appear only in the forwarded Telegram posts (example). The article does say the four-year investor and contributor unlock cycle ends in October 2026, which cuts annualized unlocks by 60%. It also says Foundation grant distributions fall by more than 50% year over year from 2026 to 2027. The claim of a buyback from the market is not in the Foundation's text.

Timing note

The plan dates from February. The 8 October post is a new commitment on the 210M lock that links back to the same update. Some forwards present the whole package as a fresh announcement, which is inaccurate.
