Lookonchain reported that U.S. government wallets sent 17,733 BTC and 750 WBTC, valued at $1.54 billion in total, to Coinbase Prime over three days, while BTC fell 6.9% (Lookonchain). The timing shows they happened during the same period, but does not show the deposits caused the decline.
Was the government selling? The transfer report establishes deposits to Coinbase Prime, not a completed sale. The reports and searches available here do not identify a sale or its proceeds. The sources do not name what happened to the deposited coins afterward.
What the timing can tell us
BTC was trading near $82,500 on October 9 (exchange quotes). Other posts pointed to ETF outflows, liquidations, and broader risk-market pressure, but those claims do not isolate the effect of the government transfers (ETF outflow and market discussion, selloff commentary). The evidence supports a contemporaneous transfer and price fall, not a causal conclusion.
