Sberbank crypto trading: was it announced, and what are the details?

Yes, in substance. Sberbank is preparing to launch crypto operations inside its retail services, with a first launch planned for 1 December. The viral wording ("announces", "all customers", "Bitcoin trading") is looser than the primary reports, which describe a test and a regulatory status.

What the primary reports say

  • On 6 Oct 2026 the Telegram channel markettwits reported, citing Bank of Russia data, that Sber was the first in Russia to receive status as a digital depositary. It can now record digital currencies and rights to them. The first operations are planned from 1 December, inside familiar Sber services, with no separate apps.

  • On 8 Oct 2026 (08:41 UTC) markettwits reported that Sber had started testing crypto operations for retail investors in "Sberbank Online".

What the viral posts add

  • WatcherGuru posted at 09:14 UTC on 8 Oct that Sberbank "announces it is preparing to launch crypto trading for over 100 million users". The post has about 152,000 views. @cryptorover and @pete_rizzo_ amplified it. Pete Rizzo's claim that it will launch "#BITCOIN trading to all customers" is stronger than what the sources show.

  • CryptoMeterIO gave more specifics: 110M+ customers, 1 December, initially BTC, ETH and USDT. This is a single X post and I found no primary document confirming the asset list.

  • CT_Richt3r says Sberbank was approved as a crypto custodian in Russia. That matches the depositary status.

Caveats

  • The posts do not link a Sberbank press release or an official statement. I found nothing on Sberbank's own channels.

  • I found no Russian-language confirmation of the asset list, who gets access, or limits. The posts do not explain whether "all customers" means everyone or only qualified or test users.

  • I found no price reaction data for BTC.
