US government BTC move on 2026-10-08: did it happen, and is it a sale? Yes, the transfer is confirmed by several sources. It looks like a wallet reshuffle, not a sale: no exchange deposit of these 12,267 BTC has been reported.

What happened

WuBlockchain, citing Arkham, says an address labeled "U.S. Government: Bitfinex Hacker Seized Funds" sent out 12,267 BTC (about $1.01B) on October 8 at 13:33 UTC. Lookonchain flagged it as the US government transferring out "another" 12,267 BTC, and Cointelegraph repeated it.

Where it went

CoinDesk reports the coins went from a Bitfinex hack seizure wallet to new, unlabeled addresses, with no exchange deposit recorded. It reads that as reshuffling rather than a sale. So "unknown wallet" means unlabeled, not hidden. The destination addresses are not named in the material I found, so they are not listed here.

Context

This is part of a run of government transfers:

  • Korean Alpha EN counts 833 BTC on Oct 6, 4,695 BTC on Oct 7 and 12,267 BTC on Oct 8, which is 17,795 BTC (about $1.5B) in three days. It says the purpose of the transfers is unconfirmed.

  • Separate, earlier transfers did reach Coinbase Prime. WuBlockchain says more than 6,200 BTC went there over the previous two days. PlanetDefi puts about $566M there (around 4,632 BTC, 119M USDT and 750 WBTC), partly tied to Bitfinex and FTX/Alameda forfeitures. It notes that a Coinbase Prime deposit does not by itself mean a sale, because the US Marshals Service uses it for custody and trading.

Market reaction

BTC fell below $82,000 after the report (happycoinnews) and briefly dipped under $81K. Quotes at 20:17 UTC were about $81.8K on Binance, OKX and Kraken, down roughly 2.1% over 24 hours. Other pressure was in play the same day: a Telegram digest attributes the drop to Fed minutes, Brent above $100, and talk of AI breaking wallet cryptography. Neome_com reports about $480M of liquidations, and Lookonchain shows Bitcoin ETFs with 5,461 BTC of net outflow in a day. The government move is one of several drivers, not the proven cause.

What it means

The sale risk is real but unconfirmed. The part that matters is whether these coins later land on Coinbase Prime or another exchange. A deposit there would be the stronger sell signal. Until then, the flow is wallet reshuffling. Commentators disagree: AleksejGudov reads the earlier Coinbase Prime transfers as sale preparation, while debest_nft stresses that a transfer alone does not show a sale.

The sources do not name the receiving addresses or the purpose of the move.
