STRK holders approved research only into a possible move from an Ethereum Layer 2 to an independent post-quantum Layer 1, with more than 93.5% of voting power in favor.
The vote was a non-binding seven day Snapshot poll gauging holder interest, not approval of the transition itself. Any actual move would still need a separate governance vote.
The stated reason is quantum security. Starknet can harden its own components, but its bridge and data availability still depend on Ethereum's timeline, while an independent L1 would control those upgrades.
StarkWare targets a draft whitepaper in November. The Starknet Foundation says a joint StarkWare x Foundation working group starts the research today, with updates here.
Its October 15 proposal says STRK remains the native token with no new token, and Ethereum bridges keep working either way. The result was reported October 22 by crypto_banter and Wu Blockchain, the latter citing the Snapshot proposal.
