On Oct 29 hackers drained about $6.3B from a Binance hot wallet in roughly 20 minutes, which Binance called the largest crypto hack on record in its statement.

Binance says entry was via a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop giving access to withdrawal services, with no private-key leak found so far, and that it reserved over $6.34B in company funds so user funds are safe.

TRM Labs and Chainalysis attribute it with high confidence to TraderTraitor linked to North Korea, the same actor blamed for the $1.5B Bybit hack in Feb 2025. Binance itself has not named a culprit. About $3B was frozen on-chain with issuers and partners.

Withdrawals and deposits were paused for an infra rebuild, expected back by Sunday with proof of reserves Monday. CZ added in his Oct 30 post that $6.3B is biggest in USD terms but not in BTC terms, Mt. Gox was 650,000 BTC. President Trump said Oct 30 the US is "looking at it," without confirming North Korea, per BitcoinMagazine.

So the viral posts are broadly right on size, speed, laptop vector and North Korea suspicion, but the historic comparisons to Saddam Hussein, Dar Es Salaam and Dresden are their own framing, not investigators' findings.
